The Urban Forest Map initiative seeks to document every tree in San Fransisco to study the environmental impact of urban greenery. My favorite line is, “It’s like a census for trees.” What better way to incorporate trees into everyday life than to treat them like American citizens, I guess?
The whole project is very entertaining to me. Whereas one might expect this information to be kept in a private city database, it is actually presented in an interactive form on the site — Google Maps full of tree icons — so that San Fransisco’s citizens can document new trees, reference existing trees and access loads of information on the state of the city’s urban forest.
